FAQ’s

Why should I use sod instead of seed?

Seeding a new lawn will require a lengthy process of watering, mowing, fertilizing, treating for weeds, and there is still a chance of washout, pest issues, and more to deal with. Sod can bring healthy, lush grass to any area in just the time that it takes to lay it.

Do sod farms remove top soil?

This is a common misconception. When sod is harvested, the vast majority of it is thatch, root system, and a small amount of soil to retain moisture and nutrients. Along with this, the majority of the grass’s root system is left in the soil, actually increasing the amount of organic material in the soil over time.

Are a lot of chemicals used to produce sod?

As farmers, we take great care in protecting the health of the natural environment, as it’s this environment that provides us with our living. We work to minimize any amounts of chemicals introduced in our fields, and typically will only need to spray our fields with one selective weed control application per crop. This application is done the year prior to harvest (it’s a 1.5 to 2 year cycle per crop) using a commonly available weed control product. We are also looking to experiment with an all natural type weed control to eliminate any synthetic chemical spraying in the coming years.

Will sod help prevent erosion?

Sod can be used as an excellent erosion control method on hillsides and steeply sloping land prone to runoff.
